Make Your Own Mahatma
Make Your Own Mahatma is a series of photographs produced using props and costumes borrowed from ‘Sri Vinayaka Costume Shop’ in Yelahanka New Town, Bangalore. Amongst the costumes available were the ones for India’s various political historical figures. Through these costumes, I explore the materiality that constitutes the iconic images of these leaders in our minds. By performing in these costumes for the photographer at the local photo studio, Maa Amibka Digital Studio, I also make use of vernacular digital practices prevalent in the urban landscape. Engaging with their popular media representations, and through my embodiment and impersonation of each figure, I engage in an act of remembering, living and recreating them.
